Jean-Louis Sankalé
Dr. Jean-Louis Sankalé, PharmD, DSc., is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Sankalé currently participates in a number of studies supported by the US National Institutes of Health, one of which is examining the in vitro correlates of HIV-2 mediated HIV-1 protection. Another research project in which he is currently involved is analyzing the diversity of HIV-1 viruses in West-Africa, in relation to pathogenesis and vaccine design. Over the past years, he has conducted extensive research on HIV molecular evolution and epidemiology.
Dr. Sankalé is also actively involved in AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria, a collaborative program that oversees training, capacity building, research and policy efforts at the state level to develop evidence-based prevention programs in Nigeria. Among many activities, Dr Sankalé has designed and led the equipment and training for a new HIV and STI laboratory at Jos University Teaching Hospital in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, that serves as support of a research collaboration. He is also collaborating with scientists in the Virology department at University of Ibadan in Nigeria, in HIV surveillance and viral diversity studies.
A native of Senegal, Dr. Sankalé is a virologist having held a number of positions at higher education institutions and teaching hospitals in Dakar. Dr. Sankalé holds a doctorate of pharmacy from the University of Dakar, prior to coming to Boston and earning a doctorate of science in virology from Harvard University. He holds post-graduate certificates in clinical microbiology and in applied leprology from the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar and in immunology from the Pasteur Institute of Paris. Dr Sankalé also attended the workshop on molecular evolution at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. Dr Sankalé has been an author or co-author of over 25 scientific journal publications and book chapters.
