For almost 15 years, the Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP), has brought biomedical researchers and health care workers from resource-scarce countries to Harvard University to train in AIDS research techniques and procedures. This training program, supported by the National Institutes of Health in United States, currently supports trainees from Botswana, Senegal, Tanzania, and Thailand; past participants have also come from India, Kenya, and Mexico.
AITRP aims to train participants in epidemiology or biostatistics, immunology, molecular biology, behavioral sciences or other sciences related to epidemiology, so that they may participate in and promote AIDS research in their own countries. To qualify, applicants must have worked in AIDS-related research programs in their home countries and must demonstrate a sincere intention to return home following the training program. For more information about the AITRP program, visit the Fogarty International Centers web site at http://www.fic.nih.gov/programs/aitrp/aitrp.html.
