Funding Opportunities

Endothelial Dysfunction in HIV Infection

Agency: National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)
Deadline: 3/26/98
Funding: Up to 8 awards of $25,000
Contact: Lan-Hsiang Wang, 301-435-0510, email: lw72f@nih.gov; Hannah Peavy, 301-435-0222, email: hannah_peavy@nih.gov
Web: www.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/ RFA-HL-97-014.html
NHBLI invites applications for research grants focused on how HIV infection alters the expression of endothelial cell genes, thereby modifying the normal structure and function of the endothelium and exposing organs to HIV-infected cells and to circulatory factors that could cause damage.

Small Grants for Nonprofit AIDS Organizations

Agency: Chicago Resource Center • Deadline: 3/31/98 • Funding: Most awards range from $1,000 to $4,000 • Contact: 312-759-8700 • The Chicago Resource Center awards one-year grants to community-based organizations focused on HIV prevention. Organizations whose budgets total more than $100,000 are ineligible for funding.

Impact of HIV Variation on Immunological Recognition

Agency: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
Deadline: 5/1/98
Funding: No specific setaside
Contact: James Bradac, 301-402-0121, email: jb68k@nih.gov
Web: www.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-98-011.html
NIAID invites applications to research the impact of HIV variation on immunological recognition and other investigations that will ultimately provide useful information for identifying the HIV strain(s) that should be used for vaccine development.

Demographic Research on Sexual Behaviors Related to HIV

Agencies: National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHHD), National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
Deadline: 5/1/98
Funding: No specific setaside

Web: www.nih. gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-97-106.html
NIAID invites applications to study the molecular biology, immunology, and host factors involved in the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). The study’s goal is to advance understanding of the virus/host infection process in this model and to determine the potential use of, and to validate the application of, the FIV model for testing potential therapeutics, topical microbicides, and novel mucosal-targeted vaccine designs against HIV.

AIDS-Related Research at Regional Primate Research Centers

Agency: National Center for Research Resources (NCRR)
Deadlines: 5/1/98 and 9/1/98
Funding: Up to $350,000 for up to 5 years
Contact: Jerry Robinson, 301-435-0744, email: jerryr@ep.ncrr.nih.gov
Web: www.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-97-030.html
NCRR invites applications for AIDS-related research that uses non-human primates and other research resources at the seven regional primate research centers.

Epidemiology of AIDS and Retroviral-Associated Cancers

Agency: National Cancer Institute (NCI)
